Which Church?

By: K. B. Napier

Stand outside any church building...you’ll see a name and maybe a ‘denominational’ title. Read any church magazine or newspaper...and the number of church and denominational references is mind-boggling. Listen to (almost) all Christians...somewhere along the line, they’ll talk about ‘their’ church and denomination, and their ‘type’ of Christian belief.

So, you, the bemused bystander, can be forgiven for thinking there are a trillion different brands of ‘Christianity’, all jostling for prominence! Maybe you’re not in the least bit interested. On the other hand, your heart might have been warmed by God recently, and you genuinely want to find out what this whole ‘faith’ and ‘being saved’ thing is all about. But where do you start?

Walk in to any shop and you can usually walk up to the counter selling the stuff you want to buy. Look at ads in the ‘paper, and you will see straight away what is on offer. But, think about going to a church – and it’s a bit like trying to make your way around a solid brick maze with your legs in a sack and your eyes shut! ‘Bewildering’ doesn’t even come close to the name of the task!

So, for whatever reason, you think you ought to find a church. Perhaps just to sit at the back to hear what goes on. Or, to discover more of what the ‘gospel’ really is all about. or, you might even have been prompted to talk about your sin and ask ‘What must I do to be saved?’.

How, then, can you find your way through the maze? I’ll be very frank with you – with immense difficulty! Even so, let’s look at some pointers...

Dog-Collared Mongrels

Dog collars are associated with ‘church’, so why not just follow the next dog-collared fellow and walk in? Be careful – a dog collar does not maketh a true Christian minister! A dog-collar only shows you that a man wears a dog-collar!

A dog-collar is not required by the Bible, or by God. Mostly, dog-collars are worn by institutionalised ministers from the established churches. A few of these are good men, but most are not even Christians. In spiritual terms, then, they are ‘mongrel’ not thoroughbred. They are the blind leading the blind and will do you no favours if your quest is genuine.

Denominational Rigor Mortis

Many denominations began life for seemingly valid reasons – to emphasise some teaching or other that had previously been ignored by other denominations. But, in forming yet another denomination, they fell in to the same trap as all the others! They emphasised their own ‘brand’ and so perpetuated the circle.

God does not require denominations. He just wants churches.

Spiritual Karaoke

A vast number of people claim to be Christians. Some of them really are Christians. But, listen long enough to them and you’ll come to the conclusion that they are just playing the ‘church game’. They are like those sad beings who stand up in pubs and clubs warbling to the well-worn tunes of the karaoke machine. Some can sing but most are, well, rather awful! Good singer or bad, not one of them can sing in their own right; they need the music and words of someone else.

Who Then?

So, where do you go? Who do you listen to? For a start, you don’t listen to me! Nor must you listen to any other man or woman. Don’t rely on a book, or a minister, or a film.

The only reliable source of what you seek is – scripture. by scripture, I mean the Holy Bible. This is referred to as God’s word. Why? Because God inspired men to write it – it is what God told men to write. (If you start by denying this basic fact, then you’re on to a loser. Forget your quest, because it just isn’t real).

Two things can happen when you read the Bible (use a 1611 king James Authorised Version Bible – the ‘AV’: it is the only reliable Bible you can get). You will either be offended and view it as a load of old rubbish, or you will be drawn in by its sheer beauty and clarity of thought.

If you see it all as rubbish, then the Bible has become a ‘stumbling block, to you. You’ll find reasons for this in the Bible. Folk who view scripture in this way are not called by God anyway, so Satan (a very real person, not a figment of the imagination) will cause you to jump closer to hell. But, if your heart is strangely warmed to what you are reading (and you’ll probably want to read more and more), it is because God is prompting you to listen to what He is telling you.

In itself, this is not a guarantee that you will find your final answer, or that you will be saved. Some go a long way down the road of ‘discovery’ only to flunk the last few yards.

Help!

Right now you are unsaved and not a Christian. You have felt fine in this world up to this point, because mostly everyone around you is in the same sorry mess. But now, you are looking at that church notice board, reading the Christian magazine or tract, or listening to a ‘Christian’ chuntering on about his or her favoured ‘theology’. And it is all so very, very bewildering!

Okay, so here’s what I suggest you do. It’s only a suggestion – don’t think there is a format to becoming a Christian, because, friend, there aint!

1.

Read the Bible for yourself. You will probably not understand parts of it. Maybe you ought to get in to the straight narrative of Matthew first (roughly half way through the Bible, the first book in the New Testament). This will give you an overall view of where it’s all coming from. Then, just continue until you’ve read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

After that, try the Book of Acts. By the time you’ve read all of them, you will have come to grips with what the ‘Gospel’ is about...Jesus Christ coming to this earth to save your soul.

2.

The reason I suggest you read the Bible, is that it is the only thing you can measure any claims against...there are a lot of nutcases out there, overflowing with religious fervour but no truth. There are dog-collars without truth. There are Christians with very poor teaching behind them. All can trip you up. So, get the real truth tucked under your belt.

3.

Look for a church locally. Read their noticeboards and look at their name. Do they agree with scripture? As a very rough guide, don’t enter any church that is Roman Catholic, charismatic, Pentecostal or ‘Elim’. Don’t go in if there are references to it being ‘ecumenical’, or if the notices say they hold regular ‘healing services’ etc.

Some churches are downright unchristian – so-called ‘Christian Spiritualist’, Christian Science, Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW’s)...there’s a whole host of them around!

4.

Sadly, even churches that are ‘Christian’ can get it wrong. But, you’ve got to start somewhere and you’ll never know which one is true to scripture if you don’t go in. Just be honest with yourself. Go in and listen. Normally, God will cause you to either reject or warm-to what you hear, if you are genuinely called by Him to be saved. He does this by ‘talking’ to you through His own Holy Spirit...by guiding your thoughts and desires. Also listen to conscience. Compare with what you read in scripture. If you wish to, read some of the articles on this site. Though written specifically for people who are already Christians, they tackle vital issues in a readable way and are faithful to scripture.

5.

If you attend a church long enough, you’ll get the gist of their beliefs. If you are not comfortable with what you hear, because it does not agree with scripture, then simply leave and try another place.

No church can say it has the monopoly over truth. As the writer of this advice, I certainly do not have a monopoly. My aim is just to try to steer you away from error and toward what is of God, so that you don’t leave one mess (being unsaved) only to get in to one even deeper! A false church can screw up any desire you might have to learn the truth.

6.

Any true church you attend will have a minister who is faithful to scripture. he might make one or two mistakes, even – but you must look at his intention, not his many words. Does he preach the Gospel as you find it in scripture? To summarise, it should include teachings along these lines:

(a)

Man is totally corrupt and born in sin.

(b)

Because of this, he is bound for hell.

(c)

God is a trinity – three in one; Father, son and Holy Spirit.
No-one really comprehends that, but don’t let it scupper you!

(d)

Because we are sinners, we are unable to seek God ourselves, and we cannot save ourselves.

(e)

There is only one way to be saved – and that is through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, but He is also God Himself! That is, he was fully Man and yet He is still fully God; a human being yet divine.

(f)

As a man, Jesus never sinned. Not once. Not even in thought. Forget those films depicting Him as a mere man. God required a sacrifice, a ‘pure spotless lamb’. Only Jesus could be that ‘lamb’, because He never sinned and was not born in sin, either. (Which is why he had to be born ‘of a virgin’ without a human father). Jesus Christ, then, is our only hope. Not Buddha. Not Mohammed. Not Krishna. Only Jesus Christ. If that sticks in your throat, then so be it...but any rejection by Man does not alter eternal truth!

(g)

Jesus came to this earth specifically to die. He came to die for those who were elected to be saved, before time began. This is mind-blowing, but it’s true. If you are called to be saved, then you can be sure of this – God knew your name even before the world and the universe were made! He chose you to be saved and to enter heaven!

(h)

Jesus died physically on the cross. To say that He just ‘swooned’ is nonsense. He really did die, as a man.

(i)

On the third day, Jesus arose from His grave. He did this physically. He really was dead and then He made Himself alive again, by His own divine power, just as during His lifetime on earth he performed countless miracles, including bringing dead people back to life. It was the same power! (Note what Paul says, if you have already read the Book of Acts  - it is impossible to be a Christian if you don’t believe in the resurrection, because if Jesus did not arise from the grave, then He is still dead, and none of us can follow Him to heaven, because He cannot be there! But He is alive and He is there!).

(j)

Jesus then walked and talked amongst His apostles and was seen by many others. A short while after that, He arose in to the sky, again witnessed by hundreds of people. From there He went to be ‘with His Father’ in heaven.

(k)

In heaven, right now, He ‘intercedes’ for us. That is, He pleads our case before His Father. If you are to be saved, He will tell His Father that you belong to Him. That means you will be eternally safe from judgement and hell.

(l)

One day, Jesus will return with a myriad of angels. He will be joined by Christians who have already died. On that day He will take up everyone who is still alive, and who is a Christian, to be with Him. Then, everyone, saved and unsaved, will stand before God to be judged. Those who are unsaved will be sent to hell for eternity. Those who are saved will enter heaven to be forever with God.

So, any true minister will teach you these things. We all make mistakes, and no man is perfect. Nevertheless, that is no excuse to believe and teach error. We must believe what scripture says, not what men say. You must listen to a pastor or teacher only if what he says is direct from scripture. That is, direct from God’s word. You must only believe what I am telling you in this article, if it is from God’s word.

Find a minister who teaches the above facts and you might very well be in the place God has guided you to! It might not be all plain sailing (because of the ‘human error’ factor), but at least you will start to hear the truth. At some time, you will then be prompted by God to be saved.

Just remember – you cannot save yourself. You will not be saved just by writing your name on a ‘decision card’. You will not be saved by ‘going to the front’, or by putting up your hand because the preacher says so.

You will be saved only because God chose you before time began and, right now, you are responding to His prompting in your heart and mind. You cannot respond unless God first makes your spirit come alive. Once He has done this, you will be drawn to God and you will be saved. And, once saved, you will never be lost again. Not ever. Not even if you make big mistakes in your life (He will then prompt you to repent).

Okay?

There are no formats. God saves us individually. Yet, His ‘conditions’ are to be found in scripture and they apply to everyone who will be saved.

So, don’t listen to those who tell you to ‘go to the front’ and you’ll be saved. Don’t think signing a card will do it. Don’t let someone tell you to start talking in ‘tongues’ as proof of salvation...those ‘tongues’ are just human gibberish used to deceive you.

As you start to wind your wary way through the maze of ‘Christian’ contacts, keep your eye only on God and on His word, the Bible. If you are unable to find a true church, listen out for ‘stray’ Christians you might come across in life, and associate yourself with them (if they, too, are true to scripture). Meanwhile, read our literature, and you won’t go far wrong...so long as what you read is firmly rooted in God’s word.

Remember

There is only one Saviour.

There is only one scripture.

There is only one way to be saved.

There is only one ‘Church’.

There are no ‘brands’ of Christianity.
